Q: Does the HDR-50 support line 21 (closed captioning)?
A: No, unfortunately the DN-200 does not support line 21.
Q: Can I playback a file simultaneously while I am recording on the HDR-40/50?
A: No, unfortunately, you won’t be able to playback a file while it is being recorded on the HDR-40/50. However, you can playback the recorded file after your recording is finished.
Q: How do I combine multiple .m2t files on my timeline?
A: M2T_FileCombine.exe
Q: How many hard drive enclosures does HDR-40/50 come with? Can I purchase hard drive enclosures separately?
A: HDR-40/50 comes with two hard drive enclosures, but with only one hard drive installed in an enclosure. You can purchase hard drive enclosures separately and the part number is HDD25.
Q: Do you recommend any certain brands or specifications on which hard drive to use with this recorder?
A: Yes, we recommend the following predications for the drive: 7200rpm 8MB buffer 2.5″ SATA HDD. Datavideo has tested Hitachi, Western Digital, Fujitsu for use with our DN series recorders. We do not recommend Seagate hard drives with our recorders.
Q: Can I replace my 250GB HDD with a larger HDD?
A: Yes, you can replace it with a larger HDD (up to 750GB and must be 2.5” high). Hard drives that are larger than 750GB have a larger height, which will not fit inside the enclosure for the DN-400/500 and HDR-40/50.
Q: If the input signal is a HD-SDI source, can we still record SD video files on this recorder?
A: No, the recorder does NOT downscale or upscale the signal source between HD or SD.
Q: What is the maximum height of the hard drive that will fit inside the enclosure?
A: 11.6 mm is the maximum height of the hard drive that will fit inside the enclosure.
Q: The Final Cut Pro does not natively support the .m2t files. How can I convert .m2t files to use with Final Cut Pro?
A: You can use a program like, Streamclip to convert the .m2t files.
Q: Which NLE software applications can read .m2t files natively?
A: Here is a list of Non Linear Editors which support .m2t files: Adobe Premiere CS3 or higher, Sony Vegas 8 or higher, Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum, Grass Valley Edius, Avid Media Composer and Pinnacle Studio 12 or higher
Q: If I am sending a HD/SD-SDI video signal, but the audio signal via Analog XLR input, will the audio source embed itself in the HD/SD-SDI output?
A: No, the HD/SD-SDI output will only output embedded audio if the input video source has embedded audio. However, the HDMI output will embed the Analog audio source in the output.
Q: I am trying to put my HDR-40/50 in HDD mode, but the recorder seems to be frozen. The screen says, “Please Wait”. How can I fix it?
A: The HDR-40/50 must be connected via FireWire to the computer prior to entering the hard drive mode. If the recorder is not connected, it will continually check for FireWire connectivity, which will cause it to lock up. Please cycle the power on the recorder to reset the recorder.
Q: My HDR-40/50 record for a few minutes and then stopped. The “I/O Error” message appears on the screen. What could be the problem?
A: It sounds like the source is unstable. Whenever you have a source that is unstable, the HDR-40/50 will stop recording and the I/O error message will appear.
Q: Can I set the HDR-50 to control power from the rear switch only?
A: Yes, you can. Please call us at 562-696-2324 for instructions.

I am trying to use the removable hard rive to upload files into Final Cut Pro. Currently, it is not recognizing the files. What must I do to remedy this?
Hi Michael,
Did you record the files in m2t format? The Final Cut Pro does not natively support the m2t files, so you need to convert the recorded m2t files to a .mov or avi using a program like Streamclip. Streamclip is a free program that you can download.
thanks!
I’m having problems with the embedded audio. I’m taking in an HD-SDI feed directly from a broadcast truck. The video side is coming through fine. The audio though is nothing but pops and crackles and digital trash. Is there anything I can do to make the embedded audio work properly?
Thanks,
Danial
Hello PBR Dan,
Have you checked all your wires to make sure none of them are faulty?
Also, is there anyway that there may be electrical interference near the recorder?
There is a setting in the audio input source menu that needs to be set to SDI to correctly capture the embedded audio. Please make sure that is selected.
We have sent you a more detailed email to your personal address so that we can better help you.
Thanks!

I Have a control question.
Will the HDR-40/50 respond to normal SONY protocol commands on the RS-422 Port? I am very interested in the unit but we really need this capability.
Thanks
Larry
Hi Larry,
I sent a HDR-50 RS422 protocol sheet to your email.
thanks!
Can i sync multiple hdr50 on timecode ?
Hello Dominic,
Regarding syncing 2 HDR-50’s using time code, the units do not have that capability at this time, however, there are plans
to add that feature to future models.
Where can we download the Firmware update utility’s so i can update the firmware?
Also, I am getting constant I/O errors. The signal that is being sent to the hdr-50 is coming from a Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E switcher. It is a HD signal using HD/SDI cabling. I would like to update the firmware to rule out an out of date firmware as the issue.
Hi Louis,
You can download the the firmware here:
http://www.datavideo.us/files/HDR-40-50_2011.03.02.zip
Constant 1/O errors usually mean that the signal is not stable. Please check the cables and the connectors on each device to make sure nothing is loose or the cables are not bad. Otherwise, please call us at 562 469 2324 so that we may troubleshoot with you. M-F 9am-4:30pm PST.
Thanks!
Louis,
I am also an ATEM 1 m/e user and also have the HDR-50 paired with it. I have noticed the same issue with my recorder, with the signal dropping out several times during a several hour long record. It would give me a video I/O error and stop recording. At the time I was using AUX 1 off the switcher. I was going to go ahead and start ruling out cables to make sure that wasn’t the issue.
It sounds like it may be a blackmagic issue more than the Datavideo, but I don’t want to rule anything out.
Have you tested any of the solid state drives with this recorder? Any recommendations in that area?
The only SSD drive which has been tested was from OCZ. Current generation SSD drives are supported. We recommend checking to make sure you have the latest firmware revision for your recorder prior to using an SSD drive.
Error: Check video Source!
I’ve been using HDR-50 for a year or so as a redundancy HD recording
of my Tricaster.
Last week I traveled with it together with my HS-2000.
I set things up as usual HS-2000 and HDR-50 then
this error appeared.
–Check video Source!
I checked my video source and everything and
I’m sure that every connection and cables were fine.
I then thought which one is broken?
my HS-2000 i hoped not… or my HDR-50
then I came back to my Studio and
set back everything with my TRICASTER and I figured
that it was my HDR-50.
I had encountered errors/problems with HDR-50 before
but I was able to fixed it, but this one knocked me out.
PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS
Thanks
Hi Mark,
Check the HD-SDI output from HS-2000. If that signal is good, we can conclude that HS-2000 is working properly. It sounds like you were not able to record a signal from your TRICASTER as well. Is that correct? Please try to record a signal from a camera with SDI output. If you are still getting the same error message, there’s something wrong with the HDR-50. Please call us at 562-696-2324, so one of our technicians can help you troubleshoot this issue.
Thanks!
I’m using 2 HDR-50s in my remote truck, and I want to use one of them to playback prerecorded video for opens and roll-ins, but when I send the HDMI output through a converter to HS-SDI then to our switcher (Panasonic HS-400), the picture flashes. Is there a way to accomplish this? Thanks!
Hi Ross,
Are you using our DAC-9 converter? Do you have a monitor with an HDMI input that you can test the signal from the HDR-50 with?
Thanks!
